For specific questions regarding field sites, please consult with the GIEU Office via email at gieu@umich.edu.GIEU Site - BrazilExploring Education, Culture and Community from the Ground Up: A Partnership Project GIEU Site - China, BeijingSocialization for Learning in China and the United States: An Introduction to Cross-Cultural Research GIEU Site - China, TianjinUsing the Tools of Spoken English, American Popular Culture and Service Learning in China GIEU Site - Detroit(Re)Defining Culture, (Re)Writing Care, (Re)Creating Reality from Hope: HIV/AIDS and Health Disparities in Detroit GIEU Site - GhanaNo Health without Mental Health: Psychological Stress in the Lives of Young Women in Accra, Ghana GIEU Site - GrenadaCross-Cultural Perspectives on Child Development: The Grenada Roving Caregivers In collaboration with the Roving Caregivers Programme in Grenada, GIEU students will participate in an early intervention program designed to strengthen vulnerable families and support the healthy development of young children in rural communities. Students will learn about and contribute to an intervention model that centers on home visiting by assisting with documentation through writing, photography, and video. Students will accompany Rovers on foot, literally over hill and dale, into homes in Grenada and will have the opportunity to observe the program’s effect on children’s cognitive, socio-emotional and physical development, as well as the development of their families and the broader community. GIEU Site - Hawai'iRenewing Culture and Environment while Improving Academic Achievement for Hawai’ian Youth Participants will explore factors that have resulted in inequity and lack of resources for native Hawaiian students. We will live and collaborate with Kamaile Academy school faculty, and teach literacy and math skills in the K-8 summer school while we learn about culturally relevant pedagogies and indigenous language practices. In addition, we will participate in the school’s green initiative by installing solar panels, building a vegetable garden and working on environmental reclamation projects. Finally, there will be opportunities for historical investigation, cultural experiences and geographic exploration. GIEU Site - IndiaIndia: Poverty and Hope Students will learn about issues of poverty, cultural isolation, and community development through working with The Hope Project, a local grass roots community development organization in Delhi, India. Participants will live in a predominantly Muslim neighborhood in Delhi. They will work primarily in classrooms as teachers’ assistants. Students will attend workshops on teaching English as a Foreign Language at the UM English Language Institute before departure. There will also be the opportunity for students to observe and work in some areas of health care and micro-enterprise. GIEU Site - ItalyPuppet Pageant Art in Morinesio, Italy GIEU Italy students will work with master puppet artists and local residents in isolated rural Morinesio embracing multiple forms of creative expression including mask-making, large-scale puppetry, ceremonial sculpture making, and landscape art. Students will be exposed to a unique artistic and agricultural/eco-tourism community which offers a broad range of challenging ideas combining the content, technical production, and performance aspects of large-scale puppetry using stories gathered from individuals who live in, and near this small, economically isolated, rural village located in the Occitan speaking region of the Italian Alps. GIEU Site - Mexico/U.S.Contentious Lives on the Border Students on this project will interact with people of multiple perspectives to gain an understanding of the phenomenon and process of undocumented immigration. Students will participate in community outreach initiatives organized by BorderLinks, an international leader in experiential education, including working with children and adults at the Casa de Misericordia in Nogales, Mexico. They will also work at a desert aid station providing water, food, and basic medical care to migrants. GIEU Site - PeruPaying Homage to the Weavers of the Americas in Cusco, Peru Hand-woven fabrics are a form of living history in the Peruvian highlands of the Cusco region. Students will live in rural areas and in home-stays, learning the ancient art of weaving and the weaving way of life. They will work with a non-profit organization devoted to the preservation of Peruvian Inca textiles to help curate an exhibition for the Conference of Weavers of the Americas. They will also write life stories of individual weavers for the organization. GIEU Site - South AfricaVulnerable Road Users and Transportation Systems: The Case of South Africa This project aims to investigate the transportation safety environment of vulnerable road users as they interact with the highway system in South Africa. Working with partners at the University of Pretoria and the University of Limpopo, GIEU South Africa students will visit local schools and community groups, making presentations on road safety and gathering data from all stakeholders. This project welcomes students from a wide range of academic disciplines, including public health, social science, engineering, architecture, urban planning, development economics, etc. With their South African partners, students will end the project presenting findings in a community workshop. GIEU Site - Viet NamViet Nam Today: From War to Economic Transformation and Globalization While many students are aware of the ways in which the Viet Nam war has permeated American politics and culture, very few are cognizant of the rich cultural traditions in Viet Nam or that it is among the fastest growing economies in Southeast Asia today. Accordingly, this project intends to study the dichotomy between tradition and modernity as Viet Nam becomes further connected to the global economy. In addition, through service work with several NGOs, it will expose Michigan undergraduates to the human consequences and lasting legacies of war while promoting a greater understanding of Viet Nam’s growing importance to today’s global economy. GIEU Site - ZambiaTrusted Messenger Intervention for HIV/AIDS through Community Religious Networks Participants will learn the multiple impacts of HIV/AIDS and what can be done using what already is known from the biomedical sciences. They will participate in ongoing research to validate an intervention within networks of community religious leaders, clergy, officers and young adults. Responses of families, faith-based and medical institutions, social support systems and communities will provide rich insights into local urban and rural cultures.
