Field Sites 2004GIEU Site - Beijing, ChinaInternational Exploration of Community Health Field Study in Site Leaders: Elaine Van Doren and Mei-Yu Yu Abstract: Students interested in development of health promotion activities and delivery of health care to culturally diverse communities will benefit from sharing of ideas with Chinese undergraduate students living in a different culture and political environment. Students will accompany two School of Nursing faculty members to Beijing and Tianjin, in rural China to participate in an ongoing collaborate project with China's Ministry of Health and Beijing University. GIEU Site - Shanghai, ChinaWhat Does it Take to Launch a Successful Global Engineering Operation? Site Leader: Jun Ni Abstract: A student’s task will be to investigate a global operation that has taken place in Shanghai, focusing on issues encountered by that company in ramping up/maintaining its operations with its global partner. Students will choose an example of a global operation and research background motivations behind the global operation both before and during the field experience. In addition, they will be required to perform interviews on both sides of the ocean in order to compare perspectives on cross-cultural issues related to the operation. This GIEU experience is open to non-engineering majors. GIEU Site - Cuba/MichiganCrisis and Transformation: The Food Systems of the United States and Cuba Site Leaders: Catherine Badgley and Ivette Perfecto Abstract: This experience introduces students to the farming and food-marketing culture of the United States (as represented in Michigan) and to the recently transformed farming and food-marketing culture of Cuba. Both settings present cultures that are new to most students. Participants will visit various sites of agricultural production and marketing in both locations and interact with the people who make these activities possible. GIEU Site - Munich, GermanyExploring Intercultural Communication and German Language and Culture Through Visual and Theater Arts and Intercultural Dialogue Site Leader: Janet Hegman Shier Abstract: Students will explore the intersection of arts, identity, social issues and social responsibility through study and production of visual and theater arts in Munich and through intercultural dialogue with German students and artists along with foreigners studying in Munich. Students with different disciplinary interests will have the opportunity to participate in the project examining sources of and exposure to indoor pollution in two urban neighborhoods. GIEU Site - Morazan, HondurasInternational Community Service Learning Abstract: This project will provide an interdisciplinary, service learning, experience for students to aid understanding of complex relationships between socio-economic position, gender, health, power, international, and community development in Morazan, Honduras. Students will be placed for three weeks in home stays and assigned to one of six social service organizations. GIEU Site - Varanasi, IndiaGlobalization and Local Narratives: The Lives of Craftsmen in a Modern, Traditional Society Site Leader: Nita Kumar Abstract: Students will go to Varanasi, North India to participate in the ethnographic experience of spending time with craftsmen’s families (weavers, potters, embroiderers, masons, and carpenters) doing everything that the families do. The aim is for students to grasp how strong local meanings, structures, and politics (“narratives”) are, even in the age of globalization and modernity. GIEU Site - Oaxaca, MexicoHealth and Illness in the Mexican Context Site Leader: Judith Lynch-Sauer Abstract: This program is designed to support the development of cultural competence in students with an interest in health professions by examining the effects of health and illness from an ecological framework. Students will examine the relation between Mexican cultural beliefs and health and illness practices. This cultural immersion experience includes a variety of experiential learning experiences, including observations in healthcare settings and discussions with lay and professional health providers, and homestays will provide students with a panorama of health and illness in Mexico. GIEU Site - Ifugao, PhilippinesCulture, Language, and Public Policy-Philippines (CLAPP-Philippines) Site Leaders: Adelwisa Weller and Martha Adler Abstract: This project is designed to provide undergraduate students experiences in intercultural cooperation through language immersion, academic interaction, community service, and planned cultural encounters. Students will come out with content learning, international experience, survival language skills, knowledge of policy implementation, and friendship with students and residents of the communities they served. GIEU Site - Santiago de Compostela, SpainCreating an Inclusive Community on the Way: Adventure Education for the New Millennium Site Leaders: Andrew Noverr and Annie Hesp Abstract: This project is designed to offer participants unique cross-cultural learning experiences while they complete one of the most significant Christian pilgrimages, Saint James’ Way, during a Holy Year. Walking an average of ten kilometers a day, the group will travel from town to town as it gradually makes it to the final destination, the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Not only will students better their knowledge of Spanish, they will also broaden their cultural understanding, learn to work with a group of diverse people, and challenge themselves, physically and emotionally, to complete the pilgrimage. Website: www.lsa.umich.edu/rll/camino/ GIEU Site - Ho Chi Minh City, VietnamCultural Immersion in Postwar Vietnam Site Leader: Thi Nga Nguyen Abstract: Students will improve their language skills and expand their cultural horizon by living, working and sharing experiences with Vietnamese people. Focus will be placed on the exploration of cultural traditions in the host family’s everyday life and working along with Vietnamese in social service organizations, such as “Homeless Children Outreach Project”, “HIV/AID Prevention Project”. Field trips to historical and cultural sites of interest, exploration of archeological vestiges of ancient civilizations, visits to museums, theatres, art galleries will also be a valuable part of this experience.
