Abstract: Students will be linked with the Boggs Center to Nurture Community Leadership on the East Side of Detroit. There they will participate in the Detroit Summer, a multicultural organization promoting youth participation in community projects that are revitalizing inner-city neighborhoods.

Community Music Making

Abstract: Students will travel in several regions exploring the community-centered musical culture of Ghana. Several host experts will assist with individual understanding and research as well as how to bring this musical experience back to the U of M campus.

Abstract: Students will be involved in comparative community research and home stays as part of a larger MexUSCan Project that looks at the urban conditions implicated by the NAFTA agreement of 1994. Host educational and community institutions at each site will assist.

Abstract: While in homestays, students will study the Mexican healthcare system with local experts and study culture and language at the Instituto Cultural de Oaxaca. The interplay between sociopolitical, cultural, and historical factors in health and health delivery will be emphasized.

Abstract: Students will gain background on the role of migrant agricultural workers in the local state economy and the conditions impacting the lives of these workers. They will interact with migrant communities to provide important legal, educational and health information as well as understand situations directly.

Abstract: Students will visit several historical and contemporary cultural and project sites and explore with local experts the dilemmas and complexities that challenge contemporary African nations. Traditional Africa, the slave trade, African Islam, and tourism will be examined as contributors to the modern context.
