Global Intercultural Experience for Undergraduates

Faculty - Frequently Asked Questions

2009 Faculty Application Deadline: WED Oct 1, 2008

Which faculty members are eligible?
Faculty (tenured, tenure-track, research track), as well as individuals with continuing Lecturer appointments at the U-M Ann Arbor campus are eligible to apply.

How do faculty members benefit from GIEU?

  • Receive funding for experiential projects off-campus
  • Be named a GIEU Teaching Fellow
  • Design and implement cross-cultural educational practices that foster innovative teaching methods
  • Advance your on-site research with an undergraduate team
  • Receive funding for experiential learning
  • Mentor exceptional U-M students
  • Work with colleagues traveling to a variety of sites
  • Develop multicultural teaching skills
  • Lead an interdisciplinary undergraduate team in the field
  • Gain insight into the lives and thinking of diverse multicultural undergraduates
  • Facilitate mutual exchange with local host communities
  • Receive project support from program office

How are students selected for each field site?
GIEU recruits students who are interested in an intercultural experience, regardless of location. Students apply, therefore, to the program as a whole, rather than to one specific field site. The matching process begins at Orientation and continues through January. Though students do have input into their field placement, and faculty leaders are consulted, all final field placement decisions are made by the GIEU office.

When will the travel portion take place?
Applicants should identify specific project dates (3 or 4 weeks) on the Teaching Fellow Application Cover Sheet and Proposal. Travel dates for the field experience must begin no earlier than May 4 and be completed by August 15.

Where is the field site experience expected to occur?
GIEU is designed to foster rich experiential learning outside of the campus classroom setting. Domestic and international project proposals that expose undergraduates to cutting-edge intercultural academic work and field study experiences qualify for GIEU project funding.

What is the Teaching Fellow time commitment?
Teaching Fellows will be expected to attend and participate in the following program sessions. Sessions will prepare site leaders for their experience, while promoting discussion with colleagues. Teaching Fellows will also be expected to participate in the selection process of their undergraduate team, as well as accompany and mentor them for the full duration of the field experience.

Only one $5,000 stipend will be disbursed per GIEU field site. If a faculty member chooses to appoint a co-leader, the stipend will be divided between the two.

Do Student Scholars receive academic credit?

Student Scholars will be automatically registered in the two-credit GIEU course, UC 275, taught by GIEU staff. Students will receive one credit in Winter 2008 and one credit in Fall 2008. UC 275 is graded as “Credit” or “No Credit” and can be used in all schools and colleges. UC 275 registration is required for participation in the GIEU Program. Students must attend all class sessions and complete all course assignments in order to travel to the GIEU field site.

Can field sites be linked to a specific course?
Yes, however Student Scholars cannot be required to take the course. Students enrolled in the course are not automatically admitted to the GIEU Program; though they may participate if their costs are covered independently.
